In defense of the Atenean community.
One of Radioactive Sago Project’s albums is entitled, “… Ang Daming Nagugutom Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin”. Vocalist Lourd de Veyra plugs, “Bilhin ninyo ang album namin, “… Ang Daming Nagugutom Sa Mundo Atenista Ka Pa Rin”. I’m not angry at Radioactive Sago. In fact I love Lourd de Veyra. I want him to write me a song. This is just a reaction.

 | kapaow wrote on Jan 11, '09, edited on Jan 11, '09 Cole, I think the man was referring to Atenean socio-Economic aptitude to be rich kids in an expensive school in a world where the poor are starving. -_- The JEEP program actually confirms the stereotype. Opening line goes "Did you know that most of the Filipino population take the jeep to work and school?... this program is meant to put you in their shoes... blah blah blah..." It sucks but the reality is, maraming rich kids talaga sa ateneo. |

 | Nice one, Nicole. Your mom is particularly proud of this posting! I have a number of ex-Atenean friends and the fact that I chose to call them "friends" means just one thing: they're intelligent, funny, unpretentious and gracious. On the other hand, I also know of a number of ex-Ateneans who have a chip on their shoulder and think that they're God's gift to the organization they belong to. I don't think it's the fault of their school that they turned out that way though. Instead, I would pin the blame on the parents. Having been blessed to have lived and worked overseas and competed with the best and the brightest - including graduates of the world's top 10 universities - I have only one thing to say to the smattering of snobs and humbugs in Katipunan, Taft, Pasay Road, etc: Those who have nothing else to prove are those who are most humble! Or in the words of Shakespeare: "I did never know so full a voice issue from so empty a heart: but the saying is true - The empty vessel makes the greatest sound." |
 | This comment has a thousand different meanings. Haha. |
 | At heto naman, iisa lang. :)) |
 | walang kamatayang pag-ibig sa pamantasan ng ATENEO! I salute you! :) |
 | From a repost as well...great job. It's definitely what most of us who come from average families think. :) |
 | Galing!
 | Hi, I don't really know you but I agree to everything that is written here. Siguro it's just one of the common mistakes of people; that is, when they put label to almost everything. It sucks (and it's bad) to be judged by people according to your school affiliation or for whatever reason. Pero there's really nothing that we can do about it. Fixed na kasi yung midset nila. We just have to prove them wrong. Oh well, you're getting there:) |
 | And later comes the TOFI conclusion. Just wait for it. Sige lang. =)) |
 | Can I re-post this? This is really great - gives justice to all of us Ateneans. |
 | I LOVE THIS!!! Tama Ka super as in |
 | I'm overwhelmed! I can't reply to everyone one by one anymore ang dami! I'm glad I was able to reach out to a lot of people, even to those I don't know personally. (Including our very own Sanngu president, no less. I'm honored. *blush*)
Just spreading the Ateneo love, and the Ateneo truth. :D
TO EVERYONE WHO PLANS TO REPOST THIS: Credit please. I received an email of my own blog entry and it was anonymous. Wala lang. It's a weird feeling. hahaha |
 | Hi!
Gusto ko sanang hinging ang iyong pahintulot na i-repost sa blog ko ang sinulat mong ito. Maraming salamat! ^^;
BTW, Atenista pareho si Dingdong at Karylle. Hehe. Commtech si Karylle, '03 at naging kaklase ko sa Ph103 si Dingdong at ang then gf niyang si Antonette Taus noong 4th year ako. Hehe... Wala lang. Nakakaaliw lang kasi iyong reference. |
 | I just realized that there are a lot of "Ang Daming Nagugutom Sa Mundo Atenista Ka Pa Rin" blogs and links that were in my Inbox.
NICOLE, YOU'RE FAMOUS! (I'm friends a celebrity now. Go Nico.) :D |
 | read this from another site..:) nice writing..:) I'll repost..:) |
 | Agree!
But fact remains that majority of Ateneans do fit the "Atenista stereotype" mentioned above, hence the stereotyping. While it's true that not everyone in Ateneo is rich, etc. etc., it's the way everyone else sees us and we can't really do anything about it. So why take offense on something that you know isn't true?
BTW, "hindi lahat nang taga-UST ay mga siokoy na lumulusong sa baha" made me ROFLMAO.
Anyway good job!:D |
 | OMG LOL 3 WEBPAGES WORTH OF COMMENTS.
PALAKPAKAN, SIKAT NA SI NIC SA ATENEO AHAHAHAHAHAHA. |
 | lolololololololololololol
need i say moaaaar?
BLIND ITEM!!!! XD |

Hehehe. I love this part. My sis is from UST.
I'm from Miriam and not all of us do the "I'll make tusok-tusok the fishball" speak.
Great essay Nicole. |
 | Thank you all again! hahaha
|
 | Nicole,
I don't really know you, I just came across this blog when he reposted this on his Multiply site.
Let me start off by saying, great blog entry here. By the way, I hail from the school you guys despise so much during UAAP games. hehehe That's right, I am a La Sallian, and I have been since the day I learned to do my one plus ones. I am now working at 22 years old, and I've never been in any other school other than that one that proudly dons the green and white colors.
I would like to commend you for being really objective about this. I'm actually quite surprised because of the Ateneans I encounter are in forums or sites UAAP-related. In fact, that's what I usually expect when an Atenean talks about himself or the school. I may have hastily generalized, and this did prove me wrong.
Maybe people from both sides of our camps would throw a few banters here and there saying "La Salista, Christian achievers of God & country daw e nangdadaya!" or "Atenista, Men for Others daw e napaka unsportsmanlike, binastos yung kalabang natalo na sa bonfire!" tagging along the statement "Ganyan ba tinuturo sa mga eskwelahan niyo?" I just don't get it why people such statements, and for what? Just for the heck of it. Because they have this fetish of getting into fights? I don't know.
Let me also say this (and this may be the La Salle version some of you here are looking for, partially at least), hindi bobong mayaman ang mga La Salista. Biases aside, I am proud to say that the education in our institution is indeed world-class, not only because of the facilities and whatnot. I believe that a La Sallian education is as good as an Atenean education: one that entails class, and teaches its students to be great men and women to be of service for the country, for others, and for God.
Like you, I do hope that the negative stereotypes would just dissolve out of the picture and that the majority could see the good in us. Yes, maybe we are guilty of producing a bunch of "conyo", elistist people. But we are also proud to be producing people that exemplify the real meaning of being a La Sallian and Atenean, people who can greatly contribute to the enhancement of our society.
Again, kudos to a great essay!
|
 | now i finally understand!!! :-o - Lee |
 | Came across your essay from a repost.
This resonated a lot with me because I don't consider myself part of the rich kids in school (though my credentials might say otherwise -- I graduated from a snooty all-girls school and I speak perfect Sesame Street English) and I consider myself having a better world view and outlook compared to what the stereotype dictates us to be. There is a lot more than meets the eye and I don't think I can add more to what you've said.
Props to you and keep on writing. It was very powerful, witty, and insightful. |
 | i reposted it. this is just great. :D |
 | i reposted it. i credited :p this is great. *bows head* |
 | Now that you've achieved super-stellar status, you must reply!
Record-breaker ba? Congratulations, even though if getting 100++ comments isn't your agenda. XD
We shall celebrate with a dinner! |
 | I saw your post circulating LJ. (Had to search for the original for some time because you weren't credited.)
Very eloquently put! I love how you challenge the stereotype with humor so it doesn't come off as Angry Asian Kid. |
 | Read this on LJ as well. I've reposted it and I will credit. I hope you don't mind.
Good job on fleshing out your thoughts on the issue with a little bit of humor here and there! ^_^ |

Thank you! Your acknowledgment really means a lot to me. I'm glad I was able to disprove the misconception that UAAP and rivalry is all we Ateneans care about. What happened at the bonfire really disappointed me, but I'd also like to clarify that most of us don't despise La Salle. Almost all of my friends went on to La Salle for college, and that never affected our friendship. I have a lot of respect for Lasalistas. I agree that we all share a common goal, for the betterment of the nation and for the greater glory of God. :D |
 | Haha! Pati dito pala, Math is still applicable. haha! But I agree with your blog. We should really do away with stereotyping people. And more so, I would also like to say, it does not mean that if you are a rich kid, automatically you do not care about the world around you. No one has the choice to be rich when he was born. It is what one does to his riches that matters. As the movie of Spiderman says, "Great power comes great responsibility". The richer one is, the more responsibility one has:) |
 | hahaha Siokoy^^ i read your blog nbreak mo nga un pagkastereoptype ng mga tao about Ateneo. pero majority nmn tlga mayaman dun diba? not speaking in general^^ |
 | The Atenean is perceived as such because there is indeed reason: majority of the atenean population is in or above the (though contentious) Filipino middle class. Indeed it can never be generalized that ALL Ateneans are richer than ordinary; nevertheless, people have the empirical privilege to ASSUME, when presented with a singular example from the rest, that an Atenean is a member of the elite class. This is so because it is more likely for one Atenean to be rich than for him to be poor. Of course, it can also be argued that there should have never been any assumption in the first place, but that deserves another entry.
So, it is not so much that the Atenean is NOT rich, but that NOT ALL Ateneans are rich. Either way, the people nevertheless have the right to consider any Atenean rich, since that is more likely.
Not against Ateneans here; I came from Ateneo High School myself and have nothing against Jesuit education. |

I really cant mention anything more that hasn't already been said by someone who has already posted a comment. I'm so proud of you! i always believed in you and now you see why! I hope that now after all this positive feedback you believe me when i say that you are a GREAT writer! and you will be so powerful someday, people will read and believe almost anything you write and so use your gift wisely! all for the glory of God! Keep it up Nicole!!! |
 | Majority of Ateneans are rich, probably because mataas yung tuition namin. But I think people should acknowledge that a large part of the student population is composed of scholars as well.
I'm not saying that the scholars are "good" people compared to those who can afford the Ateneo tuition, merely that the few Ateneans who have represented the school as an "elitist" school shouldn't be considered as the majority. A lot of Ateneans are down-to-earth, pero dahil may iilan na naging "maarte" at "elitista", ang ideya na ng mga tao ay lahat ng Atenista ganito.
Rich people aren't bad! :)) |

Rich people aren't bad! :)) Hey Nicole!
I only got to read your blog now. Hats of to you, men! You are absolutely right!
Nowadays, people describe Ateneans as "rich, snobby, English-sprekening kids" or, as you said, "elitistas". Of course, we can't deny the fact that there are people like this in our school (like the super arte and shameful "Atenista" who wrote a foul blog about an immersion trip. argh). People who define Atenistas this way are WRONG. Of course, it's not wrong or bad to be rich. There are many people who are rich but very simple, down-to-earth, and humble. It is the people who think so highly of themselves that ruin the real meaning of what it means to be an Atenista.
If you ask me, I would define a real Atenista as this: (siyempre, someone who studies/studied in Ateneo) Someone who is honored to be in one of the excellent universities in the country (besides La Salle, UST, UP, FEU, UAAP, ADU among others) and uses that "honor" and quality education to help the community. Someone who may be rich but sets that aside and doesn't let that define his/her being an Atenista.
GREAT JOB, Nicole! This should seriously be published. :) |
 | We all have to deal with stereotypes. It isn't totally right. BUT, it's what makes Ateneo fucking illustrious, UP kick-ass (even if it's turning to a conio haven. damn you, ToFI! damn you!), La Salle bitchin', Miriam sexy, and UST old school.
Of course, there will always be people who want and will defy that stereotype. But for everybody else, Ateneo will still be a haven for oh-so-hot collegiate boys/athletes, Ateneo will always be a homogenous enclave for stuck-up, snobbish, I'm-from-Ateneo-which-automatically-makes-me-smart-AND-cool-AND-goodlooking-AND-nutfucking-rich-or-at-least-part-of-that-circle-so-shut-up-get-jealous-and-die-because-the-social-triangle-will-not-turnover-anytime-soon-bitches-----but-you're-still-welcome-to-be-a-loyal-customer-to-our-brand-when-we-graduate-wahaha trust fund babies—NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY and even with Ateneo's generous scholarships. Blame it on the rest of your schoolmates who perpetuate the stereotype. Medyo may karamihan sila. :)
Pardon my abuse for the "-".
Another point, it is not enough be aware of the issues. You have to do something about it. That's why you should urge your Student Council to attend NUSP meetings. Better yet, host the whole shebang. Everybody will win. Ateneo will prove they are not stuck-up because the rest will be in awe of Ateneo's good-looks while exchanging shots of gin and tequila with us, mere Php14-800/unit folk. Yeaaay!
And please, don't worry too much. Even if most of y'all have money and shit, doesn't mean we all hate you for it. We just think it sometimes makes some of your schoolmates superficial and, because there is no other succinct way to put it, mayabang. |
